For someone who is struggling with their mental and emotional health, choosing therapy is a great first step. However, the next big step is finding the right therapist.
I believe the ‘success’ of your psychotherapy sessions depends on the relationship you have with your therapist. The mutual trust, compassion, openness and empathy will shape your progress towards leading a wholesome and contented life.
I offer you a free discovery call, so we can get to know each other better. Following this, if you’d like to proceed, the first paid session is used as a compatibility opportunity to see if we will work well together. It can take several sessions for us to discover if I am a right fit, depending on why you are seeking therapy.
Before your first session you will have an opportunity to complete a working agreement. To help you be ready for your first session and to clarify expectations.
We can discuss when to schedule your next session if you’re ready, but there’s no requirement to make a decision right away. Everything is under your terms, and I’m here to make the process as stress-free, comfortable and flexible as you’d like.
How Psychotherapy Differs From Counselling
While both psychotherapy and counselling come under the domain of mental health, I have often found the terms being used interchangeably. In reality, counselling and psychotherapy can vary significantly.
The key difference lies in the qualification of the practitioners and the depth of their work. Counsellors primarily work with clients as ‘advisors’, to find solutions to problems that require immediate attention or are for the short term. On the other hand, psychotherapists explore your issues in greater depth, including understanding patterns that may be linked to your past experiences.
A psychotherapist is qualified to offer counselling services; however, the reverse may not be true.
As a relational integrative therapist, I do not limit myself to a single form of ‘treatment’, but use multiple approaches to offer an affirmative way through difficulties and distress. I believe in collaboration, flexibility and openness, as this tends to create the best environment for change.
